Mike was born in Calgary, Alberta, on February 24, 1963. He was drafted by Calgary in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and was the 2nd choice in the third round and 56th overall. He was traded to Detroit for Steve Chiasson on June 29, 1994. Last season Mike teamed up with Chris Osgood to win his first Jennings Trophy. He was tied for second behind Chris Osgood in goals against with 2.26. He had a season best nine-game unbeaten streak from March 3 through April 7. He also matched his career best posting 3 shutouts. In his career, Mike had three trips to the Stanley Cup Finals. He won the Stanley Cup in 1989 with the Calgary Flames. He has never won less than 20 games in a season, excluding the shortened 1995 season. He has been in six All-Star Games and is Calgary's all-time franchise goalie leader in victories with 248. Mike played for Team Canada's Silver Medal winning in the 1991 World Championships and played Juniors for Calgary in the Western Hockey League.
